All Time Record Rainfall in Indiana Puts Homes and Businesses Under Water
The greatest amount of rainfall ever recorded in Indiana history fell on South-central Indiana, in Edinburg.  The former record was in 1916 at 10.45 inches.  But yesterday's rain (June 7) was 10.92 inches.  Residents remember the storm which began on June 6, and lasted all day the 7th.  Several South-central and Southern cities in Indiana were actually inaccessible due to flooded roads.  In fact, stretches of interstate highways I-65 and I-70 were closed due to high water over the roadways.  Columbus, Indiana--the world headquarters of Cummins Diesel, was completely cut off from access and many homes were under water.  Residents and motorists had to be rescued by any available means--be it by boat or by helicopter.  Nearby (just North of Columbus, near Camp Atterbury) Princess Lake became so swollen that the dam at one end gave way--washing out road access and flooding areas south of the lake.  It was by far the worst flooding ever to occur in Indiana.  Temperatures swelled into the mid-90s on Sunday the 8th of June and humidity stood at about 80% for the day.  Governor Mitch Daniels has declared a state of emergency in Johnson, Morgan, and several other counties where flooding continues to keep people from their homes and businesses.  Go to the Links page, and click on the WTHR-Channel 13 News link to see video footage and more stories related to this.

Indiana Primary Election Results Send a Clear Message
Voters in Indiana sent a clear message to Barack Obama and to John McCain.  Voter results told these candidates "We want you" as Uncle Sam.  In an election that boasted a record 23% turnout, there was never any question when it came to who was going to win.  Obama led from the beginning and never trailed Hillary Clinton on the Democratic ticket as precinct reports came in throughout the day.  John McCain's closest rival was Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas--who garnered only 10% of the Indiana vote, while McCain took a clear win with 88%.  Indiana is largely a Republican state--normally showing "blue" for Republican in the General Elections for the past several years.

Earthquake Strikes Midwest--Felt in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky

An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale occurred in the Midwest this morning at 5:39 am Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).  The epicenter of the quake was centered in Southeastern Illinois near Salem, IL and was felt as far away as Chicago, Illinois, St. Louis, Missouri, Lafayette, Indiana, and Louisville, Kentucky.  Initially the quake was reported by news agencies as 5.4, but the US Geological Earthquake Survey site reported it accurately at 5.2.  People in central Indiana reported laying in bed feeling their bed shaking or hearing windows rattling, while others--already up for the day--reported feeling their homes shaking and hearing things rattling or furniture creaking within their homes.  No major damage was reported, but minor damage occurred in Louisville, KY where an older building lost part of its facade into the street.  This earthquake is the most severe to strike the Midwest in recent history.

The last quake felt in Indiana was January 4, 2006 with an epicenter near Equality, Illinois, about 120 miles Southeast of St. Louis--again in Southeast Illinois.  That quake registered only 3.6, and prior to that there was a Midwest earthquake in 2000.  Some recent quakes that affected or were felt in Indiana are shown in the table below.

The last recent earthquake (in the past 25 years) that was close to the severity of today's quake was in 1987, centered near Carbondale, Illinois.  That quake, on June 10, 1987 measured 5.1--lower than today's quake.  Another quake centered in Southeastern Illinois near Dale, IL, a little over 30 years ago on November 9, 1968, measured 5.5.  The map below shows approximately where today's earthquake was centered.

Brownsburg H.S. Bulldogs Win State 4A Basketball Title

With a buzzer-beating miracle shot, unlikely Brownsburg won Indiana's class 4A IHSAA State Basketball Champion-ship game at Conseco Fieldhouse, the home of the Indiana Pacers.  Brownsburg's Gordon Hayward hit a somewhat off-balance jumper after a long inbound pass was thrown in with only 2.1 seconds on the clock.  The inbound pass was almost stolen by Marion's Jay Edwards, but the Bulldogs' Julian Mavunga tipped it to Hayward who hit the winning shot right at the buzzer capping the win by one point, 40-39.  In a season where Brownsburg was never ranked very high, and in a season reminiscent of another famous Indiana championship--the Milan High School championship game of 1954--Brownsburg was the 'mouse that roared'.  Marion High School was the picked winner in the championship game.  In fact, in every playoff game right up to the state final game, Brownsburg's opponents were picked to win.  But this team of tenacious no-quitters fought their way, coached by the talented Josh Kendrick, and won the BIG ONE.  This was the first state championship in basketball for the Bulldogs in the school's history.  Earlier in the season Brownsburg also competed in and won the Hendricks County Tourney.

Brownsburg is a growing rural community located in Hendricks County about 15 miles West of Indianapolis, with a population at around 25,000 residents.  In sports, the town is most well known for its baseball teams.  In little league, the teams from Brownsburg regularly compete in state finals, and have competed in the Little League World Series several times in the recent past.  The high school baseball team regularly wins in regional and state playoff competition.
